Emerging Threats to Sequoias

Giant sequoias, the world’s largest trees by volume, have stood tall for thousands of years, adapting to natural changes in their environment. However, in recent years, unprecedented threats have emerged, endangering these ancient giants at an alarming rate. The Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition (GSLC) is committed to understanding and mitigating these threats to ensure the survival of these irreplaceable trees for future generations.

Emerging threats

Extreme Wildfires

In recent years, extreme wildfires have claimed nearly 20% of the world’s giant sequoias. While fire has always been a natural and necessary part of a sequoia’s life cycle, recent fires have burned hotter and more intensely than ever before. Fueled by prolonged drought and rising temperatures, these fires destroy even the most resilient trees. Historically, sequoias relied on fire to clear undergrowth and release seeds, but today’s megafires are capable of killing even the largest and oldest trees, a phenomenon rarely seen in the past.

Emerging threats

Sequoia Bark Beetle

A native species, the sequoia bark beetle, has recently emerged as an unexpected and concerning threat. For centuries, these beetles have coexisted with giant sequoias without causing significant harm. However, recent severe droughts and higher temperatures have weakened trees, making them more vulnerable to infestation. In the past few years, at least 40 mature sequoias have succumbed to beetle attacks, marking the first recorded instances of sequoias dying from insect damage. Scientists and land managers are actively researching methods to detect and respond to beetle activity before it leads to widespread losses.

Emerging threats

Rising Temperatures and Drought

Extended periods of drought and increasing temperatures are putting giant sequoias under unprecedented stress. Changes in the amount of water in the form of snow mean that giant sequoias struggle to access moisture in the hot growing season, leaving them vulnerable to stressors like sequoia bark beetles and wildfire. These environmental shifts are altering the delicate balance that has allowed sequoias to thrive for millennia.

A Collaborative Response

The Coalition

The Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition (GSLC), comprising federal, tribal, state, and local land management agencies, along with scientific and conservation partners, is actively working to understand, monitor, and mitigate these emerging threats. By developing early detection methods, refining fire management strategies, and studying the long-term impacts of environmental stressors, the Coalition is dedicated to protecting giant sequoias now and into the future.

These trees have stood the test of time, and we are committed to ensuring their continued survival through science, stewardship, and collaboration. Join us in our efforts to safeguard these ancient giants before it’s too late.
